Rickettsia typhi is a small, obligate, intracellular bacterium that can cause a mild febrile infection in humans. It usually is transmitted via infected flea feces. Murine typhus is considered to be one of the most prevalent rickettsial infections worldwide ( Azad, 1990 ), and was one of the most common causes of febrile illness in American military personnel during the Vietnam war ( Miller et al., 1974 ).
